Privacy Policy — Radical Chinese

Radical Chinese is designed to respect your privacy. This policy explains what data leaves your device and why.

Data Stored on Your Device

All learning data — flashcard progress, review history, settings, and reading passages — is stored locally on your device using SQLite. It is never uploaded to any server.

Data Sent to Our Server

Certain optional features send text to our backend (a Cloudflare Worker) to power AI functionality:

• AI Roleplay: Your conversation messages and the selected scenario are sent to generate AI responses in Mandarin.
• Reading Passage Upload: Chinese text extracted from PDFs or images you choose to upload is sent for AI annotation (pinyin, translations, word glosses).

This text is processed in real time and not stored or retained by our server after a response is generated. No personally identifiable information — no name, email, device ID, or account — is ever transmitted.

Third-Party AI Processing

Our server forwards text to DeepSeek to generate AI responses. Please refer to DeepSeek's Privacy Policy for information on how they handle API requests.

No Analytics or Tracking

Radical Chinese contains no analytics SDKs, advertising networks, or crash reporting tools. We do not track your behavior, build profiles, or share data with advertisers.

Permissions

• Microphone: Used on-device for real-time pitch feedback during pronunciation practice. Audio is never recorded or uploaded.
• Speech Recognition: Used on-device to transcribe your speech during conversation practice. Audio is never uploaded.
• Files/Photos: Used to let you pick a PDF or image for the reading feature. Files are processed on-device; only the extracted text may be sent to our server (see above).

In-App Purchases

Optional tip purchases are processed entirely by Apple. We do not receive or store any payment information.

Children's Privacy

This app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
